Arche-Scapes The Architecture of Christoph Kapeller

ARCHE–SCAPES:
“Arche” means beginning or origin and “Scapes” reminds of the word landscape. This show presents examples of projects of the last ten years, some built and completed, others on paper. The common background to the work is its attempt to dissolve the traditional concepts of Architecture and Landscape. Landscape is a term connected with nature, while architecture is seen as artificial. These projects propose a new type of field that explores the interface of and connection between the natural and the artificial. Landscape creates the canvas, whether it is urban, rural, or otherwise, on which the architect’s ideas start to evolve.

Christoph Kapeller, AIA has been a member of Pharmaka since 2004 and designed Pharmaka Art. Kapeller was a partner at SNOHETTA and was the partner in charge and project architect for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the widely published new library of Alexandria, Egypt from 1995 to 2001. Most recently, he designed a 23,000 square foot addition to the USC School of Architecture that will be completed in January 2006. He is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture and is the principal of CK-Architecture in downtown Los Angeles. In 2004, Christoph Kapeller was one of the recipients of the Aga Khan Prize for Architecture.
