How It Happens

January 4 – January 21, 2006

Opening Reception
Thursday, January 12th, 2006 » 6 - 9 pm

“How It Happens” is an experimental installation by the artists of Pharmaka in their non-profit exhibition space on Gallery Row in Downtown Los Angeles.

The Premise: To present publicly the private dialogue that each artist has with their own work. Each participating artist will have a section of the gallery walls and floor upon which they will install a painting along with images and objects that place the painting within the context of their creative process.

Why? By the time paintings reach the clean white walls of most commercial galleries, they have been several steps removed from their place of origin. While this way of viewing paintings has become the standard, and can be very effective, it belies the reality of the painting process. How paintings are made is rarely as clean and clear as how they are eventually presented. “How It Happens” is an exhibition that aims to place paintings in a context closer to the one from which they arise. Each artist will hang one recent painting, along with a selection of images, objects, and artifacts from their studio that will offer insight into the thinking and working of that artist. The result will be a viewing experience akin to walking into an artist’s studio - or perhaps, into an artist’s mind.

Pharmaka’s participating artists are Fumiko Amano, Randall Cabe, Christopher Cousins, Stanley Dorfman, Shane Guffogg, Patricia Howard, Tim Isham, Maureen Maki, Christopher Monger, Ana Osgood, Michael Rosenfeld, Luke Rothschild, John Scane, and Vonn Sumner.
