Informal Discussion concering the results of L.A. Ethos

In recent weeks there has been much discussion in the national press and international press about Los Angeles as one of the new ‘centers’ of contemporary art. Setting aside whether this is true or false, LA Ethos asks is there such a thing as L.A. Art? What does that mean? Does it simply indicate that a lot of emerging artists are based in Southern California or is there something else, something defining, something particularly ‘Angeleno’ in style, content or aesthetic approach that unites the contemporary art being made in the area?
Pharmaka Gallery has decided to explore this question in a unique way in the upcoming new show: LA Ethos.
- Is there a definable “style” for LA?
- Is there an underlying narrative or subject being explored by LA artists?
- What trends are apparent stylistically?
- What questions are LA artists asking themselves?
- The walls of the Pharmaka gallery will be covered with canvas and the invited artists will be asked to work, in public, on these walls, in response to the questions.
- If the artist has other questions which he or she chooses to address, these will be posted in the gallery windows.
- Artists must assume that the finished work will be a collaboration with paintings over and underlapping. This is not a show for the precious, but the precocious.
- The combined work will be a free-form group effort for exhibition to the public.
- All artists participating must respond to the question or ask a question of their own and try to answer it in the form of painting.
- All the participating artists will be interviewed on video before, during and/or after. Artists will also be filmed, with their permission, while working.
- Video and stills will document the whole process, possibly on an hourly basis. A catalogue and documentary are planned.
Once completed, the piece will not be for sale but will remain the property of Pharmaka on the understanding that the piece will not be sold but donated to an institution for archival purposes.
We hope that all invited artists will see this as a unique opportunity to try and capture a moment in Los Angeles art history.
