"NonObjectivity" focuses on contemporary painters who are part of the burgeoning Downtown L.A. gallery scene. The title of the show refers to the early 20th century term "non-objective" which referred to art that avoided reference to recognizable objects as subject matter. Several generations after artists like Kandinsky and Mondrian created this genre, the possibilities of non-objective painting seem greater than ever.
The use of new techniques and technologies coupled with the current pluralistic climate of art-making allows artists a degree of freedom that is possibly unparalleled in the history of Modern Art. No longer guided by any particular "ism," it is up to the individual artist to choose which combinations of shapes, colors and relationships they will employ and to what end. Looked at from this perspective, the made up word "non-objectivity" can be seen as another way of saying "subjectivity;" each artist in this show works from their own subjective viewpoint to create objects that become part of our shared reality and our shared search for meaning.
PHARMAKA's exhibition NonObjectivity will run in conjunction with the Riverside Art Museum's survey show Driven to Abstraction.
